it turns out that the 18:49 demo is illegit (TAS = tool-assisted speedruns), so that's what the DosDOOM/MBF source ports are for.
The fastest legitimate run is still 34:13 and i've confirmed that it's recorded in Doom II v1.9, so I see no reason why it shouldn't run the whole way.
however, i did find an interesting website called COMPET-N which lists the fastest times for each individual level as well as demos. the list is as follows:
